Designed by nurses for nurses, this course will provide you with the clinical knowledge and hands-on skills required to function as an effective and ethical registered nurse in a range of health settings. Throughout your studies, you will learn in state-of-the-art simulated nursing wards under the guidance of supportive and industry-qualified educators.

The health sector is growing in Australia and registered nurses are in high demand with shortages across the country. TAFE Queensland is offering an enrolled nurse to registered nurse pathway, allowing eligible nursing diploma graduates to transition seamlessly into the second year of the Bachelor of Nursing.

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to seek registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) to find work as a registered nurse.

Accreditation

The Bachelor of Nursing is nationally recognised and endorsed as an accredited course by the NMBA and provides the necessary academic qualification for eligibility as a registered nurse in Australia. Students enrolled in the course will be registered by TAFE Queensland with the NMBA as an enrolled student and will remain registered for the duration of study. What you will study

The successful achievement of this qualification requires you to complete 23 core Units of Study and 1 elective Unit of Study from the list below. You will also be required to undertake placement in an approved setting.

Diploma of Nursing pathway students will receive a one (1) year credit and commence the student pattern from Semester one, Year Two below.

Applications are being accepted for students commencing Year Two via a Diploma of Nursing Pathway option ONLY. Students with a Diploma of Nursing will receive a credit for year one of the course. Applicants should therefore have completed a Diploma of Nursing from an accredited Australian Education Provider.

General Admission Criteria
To qualify for admission, you must meet one of the following criteria below that is most relevant to your study or work background. Further general information is available here

Applicants with recent secondary education (within the past two years) - A Selection Rank of 60.00 or above after adjustment factors are applied; or International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma with a minimum of 24 points; or Year 13 NCEA Level 3 results, identifying university entrance attainment.
Applicants with higher education study - Associate Degree level or higher, and you must have passed at least two units and demonstrated a passing overall grade (Partial or Full qualification).
Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study - An Australian or A New Zealand Qualifications Framework AQF Level 4 qualification or higher (Partial or Full qualification).
Applicants with work and life experience - A prior ATAR equal to or above 60.00; or completion of any one of the recommended science subjects (via ATP or Unilearn-online offered at TAFE Queensland); or An appropriate score in the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT); or Relevant and related experience/ personal attributes/professional experience.
Applicants with overseas qualifications - Equivalent overseas secondary qualification; or an overseas qualification comparable to an Australian Qualifications Framework AQF Level 4 or higher.

Selection criteria

Applicants should be a minimum of 17 years of age and turning 18 during the first year of study in this course. Applicants who do not meet this criteria are required to participate in an Interview with the Course Coordinator before an offer being made by TAFE Queensland
It is highly recommended that applicants have:
- General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics
- English, or Literature, or English and Literature Extension, or English as an Additional Language (Units 3 & 4, C)

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

You will be provided with a recommended reading list and/or required textbooks and access to our digital library resource clinical key for nurses. The purchase of textbooks and other resources may incur additional costs, or you may be able to borrow them from the TAFE Queensland library network.

You may also be required to purchase uniform items and a nursing kit. These details will be provided after enrolment or during orientation. The cost of these depends on the place of purchase. Please note: you will be responsible for any costs associated with meeting these requirements (Estimated cost: $150).

Placement

Professional Experience Placements [PEP] at TAFE Queensland are a mandatory component of this course. PEP is embedded throughout the course to provide quality learning experiences, in a variety of health care settings, that develop your knowledge and skills, to prepare you to practice as a registered nurse.

PEP allows you to learn about the profession and extends the knowledge acquired through the theoretical underpinnings of the content. It provides an opportunity for you to build on knowledge, skills, behaviours and attitudes that will be required as a professional nurse, in accordance with the NMBA Registered nurse standards for practice (2016).

A minimum of 800 successful hours of PEP in an approved clinical setting is required by all students. This course is structured with 840 hours of PEP scheduled across the standard three-year course.

Note: Absenteeism and / or non-submission of mandatory requirements and sufficient absence that impacts on the supervising staff’s ability to make a determination as to knowledge and skills application may directly impact on the continuation and result of the placement assessment.

Where specific pre-placement mandatory documentation and evidence is not provided, or an absence is not medically or legally justified, you may incur a penalty. These incidental fees that apply to all students enrolled in the TAFE Queensland Bachelor of Nursing and are course specific incidental fees. The fees and charges outlined in the Incidental Fee Schedule are indicative fees (other than the penalty fee/s) and may vary depending on your visa status and supplier pricing.

Checks and Clearances
You will need to be eligible for, and obtain, a Working with Children Check (for Queensland students, this is a Blue Card), a Disability Worker Screening Check, and a Police Check issued by the Australian Federal Police. Mask Fitting
Mask fit testing is an annual requirement that ensures the correct size and brand of respirator mask for your face. A properly fitted mask provides healthcare workers an adequate seal to help protect against illness or injury from respiratory hazards in the workplace. Immunisation and Health Records
TAFE Queensland follows the transparency requirements related to Infectious Disease status and Immunisation status, for its students as outlined by the NMBA and Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency Registration.
These transparency requirements are embedded within the registration requirements for registered nurses or those seeking to become registered in the nursing profession. Please see Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of Infection in Healthcare (2010) for more information.

TAFE Queensland has a duty of care to its students, staff and patients to prevent disease transmission. Due to Workplace Health and Safety, all students must be up-to-date with their immunisations in order to minimise illness from communicable diseases and infections. First Aid and CPR
You must obtain, or hold a current first-aid certificate and cardiopulmonary resuscitation certificate. TAFE Queensland offers the First Aid and CPR Skill Set (SSHLT0031) which includes Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (HLTAID009) and Provide First Aid (HLTAID011) core units. The cost may vary dependant on requirements, between $150 - $360. See the post-admission requirements page and the course information handbook for more information. Registration and Self-Disclosure
The AHPRA requires TAFE Queensland to register students upon commencement of the nursing degree. Upon completion of the nursing degree, graduates are eligible to apply for nurse registration in AHPRA. For current registration requirements, please visit the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. The process of nurse registration in Australia includes the disclosure of a criminal record or any significant medical conditions that can affect working as a Registered Nurse.

Basic Key Skills Builder (bksb)
Successful applicants who have not already completed the BKSB, may be required to undertake diagnostic testing through the Basic Key Skills Builder platform. This testing is delivered by TAFE Queensland and is free of charge. This process identifies potential knowledge gaps in numeracy and literacy skills which enable TAFE Queensland to recommend relevant support services to assist you in your learning journey.

Student profile
The student profile is a snapshot of data about all students who commenced undergraduate study in the most recent semester intake, including applicants offered in all offer rounds across all campuses and international students. A student profile is provided for TAFE Queensland as a whole as well as for each of our courses. The student profile shows the number of students admitted to the institution/course, along with their life and education experiences. As 2024 is the first offering for the Course , there is no current student profile available.

Advanced standing
Advanced Standing comprises credit and recognition of prior learning. You may be able to have your prior studies or work experience count as credit towards your course and be able to graduate sooner. We call this 'advanced standing'.

Non-school-leavers must have relevant work experience or qualification that indicates likely success of course completion. Overseas qualifications and supporting documentation presented for admissions consideration must be officially translated into English, including results and definitions, and they must also undergo an assessment by the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training – Overseas Qualification Recognition.
