Mana’s health career takes a new direction

When a move to Queensland offered Mana Ito the opportunity to study a topic she was truly passionate about – holistic health, she embraced her remedial massage studies and is working in the industry already.

“Prior to coming to Australia, I was a pharmacist in Japan. But I wanted to do something more hands on, and focus on the root of the pain that clients experience,” Mana explained when asked about what attracted her to remedial massage.

“TAFE Queensland’s classes are very practical and during class I’ve been doing practical treatments, so I’m comfortable in a real clinic environment.” Mana added.

Completing a Diploma of Remedial Massage (HLT52015) at TAFE Queensland with industry-experienced teachers has meant that Mana felt well prepared for her busy remedial massage therapist role.

TAFE Queensland Remedial Massage Teacher, Ben Hart, teaches at the Toowoomba and Springfield campuses while working part time in a sports/remedial massage clinic. He is also passionate about assisting clients to achieve wellness.

“Helping clients understand their pain, and point them in the right direction to decrease/eliminate their pain, or to be able to put strategies in place to help them manage their pain, is very rewarding,” said Ben.

“It’s such a diverse industry, and a qualification can open the door to work in a range of environments, from a multimodality or private practice, to health retreats and resorts, to sports and corporate health settings.” he said.

While massage therapy can help address a range of muscle, tendon and ligament issues and aid in the rehabilitating of injuries, it’s proven to reduce stress levels, and complements a range of other traditional and holistic health treatments.

TAFE Queensland’s Diploma of Remedial Massage (HLT52015) is an advanced-level course, with graduates qualified to work as a remedial massage therapists or specialise in other complementary therapies and sport massage treatments.

Students learn to adapt remedial massage treatments to meet the unique needs of clients, implement injury prevention strategies and injury specific home care. Subjects also cover pregnancy massage, lymphatic drainage, joint mobilisation, trigger point therapies and deep tissue massage techniques.

The demand for massage therapists is very high, with the Australian Government's Labour Market Insight website predicting labour market growth of more than 20% by 2026.
