Study cookery
A career in cookery can open up a range of job opportunities in restaurants, hotels, clubs, pubs, cafes, and coffee shops. Our cookery courses give you hands on culinary experience in the preparation of appetisers, salads, stocks, sauces, soups, seafood, meat, poultry, breads, pastries and cakes. You will also learn how to work effectively in the kitchen and participate in safe food handling practices.
Rising discretionary incomes, busier lifestyles and reduced leisure time are fuelling strong growth in the restaurant industry. The success of popular cooking shows and a developing foodie culture in Australia has also boosted the sector. Despite the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Australian Government's JobOutlook service predicts very strong growth in the sector over the next five years with 112,700 positions expected for chefs alone.
We offer a range of cookery, kitchen operations, and catering courses ranging from food handling skills sets through to high-level qualifications. As a cookery student at TAFE Queensland you'll gain practical experience in our on-campus training restaurants where you will learn how to use commercial equipment and support live service. Graduates will be qualified to start a career as a food safety supervisor, cook, chef, or chef de partie in a variety of hospitality organisations.
