This course will provide you with the necessary skills to work in the engineering industry as a general mechanical engineering tradesperson such as a fitter and turner. You will gain the skills required for employment as a Higher Engineering Tradesperson or a Special Class Engineering Tradesperson - Level II. A career in this field may involve the setting up of machinery, repairing and replacing components, designing and manufacturing modifications to existing components parts, maintenance of plant and equipment, and construction and commissioning work. Entry requirements

  • English Language Proficiency: IELTS 5.5 (no individual band less than 5.0) or ISLPR 2+ on all skills or other - For a list of all English Language test accepted by TAFE Queensland International
  • Academic Requirements: Completion of Year 12 (or equivalent) with sound achievement in English and Maths. Non school-leavers must have relevant work experience or qualification that indicates likely success of course completion. For more information on the international education achievement levels equivalent to Year 10 and 12.

Students should be a minimum of 18 years of age. Student visa applicants under the age of 18 will be accepted where they demonstrate that they will be accompanied by a parent, legal custodian or a suitable relative who is aged 21 or over. Resources required

It is recommended that students have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Courses may require different resources, depending on your study location;

  • Work clothing suited to the heavy fabrication industry
  • Steel cap boots, safety boots
  • Protective clothing 

Timetable

Timetables may be available online or may be provided to you at your program orientation.

Your timetable may change every semester and you must be able to manage your commitments to ensure attendance at all your classes.

Timetables will be different across TAFE Queensland locations. This is an example of what a course timetable could look like -  

Monday and Tuesday 8.00 am - 4.45 pm and Wednesday 8.00 am - 12.00 pm.

Or

Wednesday and Thursday 8.00 am - 4.45 pm and Friday 8.00 am - 12.00 pm.

Placement

Vocational Placement: This program includes mandatory vocational placements. The vocational placement may be within any engineering company within the Wide Bay Queensland corner and may include weekdays and school holidays. Students are expected to have in place strategies to manage family and work commitments in order to meet vocational placement shifts, whose hours may be between 6am and 10pm. Students are expected to be able to meet their own travel and placement costs. Students are to arrange their own transport to and from placement.

During these placements, you may become familiar with information that is confidential to that workplace (for example financial or business affairs, personal affairs and family background of staff and clients, technical information, trade secrets, know-how, formulae, processes, ideas, and inventions). You must not divulge any confidential information that you become aware of during a placement. Breaches of confidentiality will be considered to be acts of behavioural misconduct and may result in disciplinary action.

Applying to TAFE Queensland International is easy. You can submit an application at any time, but get in early as positions are limited!

If your application is successful, we will send you an Offer of Place letter. To accept it and secure your place in your chosen program, you will need to:

After you have accepted your Offer of Place, you will receive your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) and with your CoE you can apply for your student visa. You will need to arrange your student visa before you come to Australia.

Please note that International Orientation day is compulsory. Students must attend the International Orientation Day before commencing their studies with TAFE Queensland.

Orientation

At the beginning of each semester orientation events are hosted across TAFE Queensland locations.

TAFE Queensland recommends you arrive two weeks prior to your course start date to allow time to organise and settle into your accommodation and prepare for your studies.

International Orientation which is usually conducted the week before study commences will help answer many of your questions about studying with TAFE Queensland. This comprehensive orientation covers many important topics including

  • Living in Queensland and understanding our Australian culture

  • Accommodation

  • Banking

  • Transport

  • Student safety

  • Learning support

  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), insurance and medical needs

  • Student Support Services at TAFE Queensland Brisbane

Program specific orientations are also conducted one week prior to the start of study. This is an opportunity for you to meet your teachers and classmates, get to know your campus, and familiarise yourself with your study schedule.
