Nurture the future - become a teacher or teaching assistant

RATEP is a community-based program to enable Indigenous people to become fully qualified teaching assistants and/or registered teachers. This course is a partnership between TAFE Queensland North, Department of Education and Training State Schools and James Cook University.

On successful completion, students will be able to:

  • Provide support to students and colleagues in an educational service, in accordance with industry and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural protocols.
  • Provide general teaching/learning assistance within primary school environments.
  • Provide tutor support for peers, students and parents.
  • Allows a direct pathway to becoming a fully qualified teacher.
  • Receive credit towards higher level qualifications in Education.

Entry requirements

This qualification is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.  Prospective students must complete an application form, attend an interview and complete an English and Mathematics assessment.  This is conducted at the RATEP site or supervised offsite.

Applicants should have:

  • Successful completion of Year 12, or an equivalent.
  • Mature age with background experiences which qualify them for entry into the program.

Resources required

Learner guides which are supplied free of charge throughout the course.

Students must have access to a reliable Internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at all RATEP sites.


This course requires 650 hours of study over nine months.  Students should study up to 18 hours a week.  This course delivery is blended, students will be required to complete extensive work/assessments at their RATEP location, each school week.  Participation in online classes is also required in between three, one week residential blocks in Cairns at TAFE.

Students undertake a work experience placement (up to 10 days) in a school as part of this Certificate IV course.

ABSTUDY: This program is an ABSTUDY approved course.  Students who qualify may be eligible for Away From Base assistance (travel, accommodation and meals) to attend study blocks at the approved location. Students must be in receipt of an ABSTUDY benefit and provide their ABSTUDY evidence before attending the first study block.

Payment Plan

If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.


The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Higher Level Skills Subsidy

The Higher Level Skills Subsidy is a one-off subsidy that offsets the cost of an eligible Certificate IV or higher courses.

You're eligible for the Higher Level Skills Subsidy if you:

  • Are 15 years or older and no longer in school
  • Live in Queensland full time
  • Are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with the necessary visa or work permits
  • And don't currently have (or are enrolled in) a certificate IV or higher level qualification.
  • For some courses, you may also be required to hold a certificate 3 in a relevant industry field.


You are eligible for the concession price of a course if you are eligible for subsidised training, and are listed on an Australian Government Low Income Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, if you are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, you hold a Department of Veterans' Affairs Pensioner Concession Card, or if you have a disability.
