Course overview

Build the basic skills and knowledge you need to start your plumbing career. This entry-level course will put you on the path to gaining an apprenticeship in plumbing.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, plumbing is a skill in demand with employers finding it hard to fill vacancies. The industry grew strongly over the past five years and is expected to continue to expand with around 29,000 job openings anticipated over the next five years.

In this course you will be given the practical skills and knowledge to use hand and power tools, carry out welding, read and interpret plans, and calculate quantities and other measurements. You will learn about working safely and effectively in the workplace and how to adhere to the industry's regulations and standards. This qualification includes a compulsory, supervised unpaid work placement of 80 hours, where you will be able to apply your skills and knowledge and gain valuable industry contacts.

Successful completion of this course will give you the confidence to seek an apprenticeship in general plumbing or roof plumbing. You may also seek employment as a trade assistant.

This course includes 80 hours of compulsory, unpaid vocational placement where you will be able to apply your skills and knowledge in a real work setting. Being supervised by your TAFE Queensland teachers and an employer, your skills will be developed to industry standard. You must be a Year 11 or 12 student enrolled at a participating high school, in some instances Year 10 students may be considered. In addition, the duration of your TAFE at School course cannot be longer than your remaining high school studies. Speak to your high school guidance counsellor or careers advisor for more information.

The recommended benchmark levels for this course are 2 in English, 3 in Maths and 2 in Digital Technology.

If you are applying for a VET Student Loan the required levels to meet academic eligibility, as outlined by Commonwealth guidelines, is Level 4 English and Maths.

Entry is not restricted by formal educational requirements. However, to achieve competency, you should demonstrate life experience, literacy and numeracy skills and/or other qualifications that are indicative of success in the course.

Selection criteria

It is recommended that you:

have completed Year 10 or equivalent
are computer literate

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes.
This includes the use of:

safety glasses
protective footwear with safety toe cap and non-slip soles to AS2210
leather gloves to AS2161
hair protection
You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing including overalls and long sleeved, heavy duty shirts and pants (for welding)

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

You will be provided with a recommended reading list and/or required textbooks during orientation or at the start of each unit. The purchase of these resources may incur additional costs, or you may be able to borrow them from the TAFE Queensland library network.

You are also required to have access to and bring personal stationery, a USB (minimum of 4GB), a calculator, and tools/equipment including a 5m tape measure.
