Course overview

Start a creative career in fashion with this introductory course. This qualification will give you the entry-level skills required to gain an assistant role in the fashion industry.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, the number of people working as fashion, industrial and jewellery designers grew very strongly over the past five years. Growth in the sector is expected to remain steady with around 4,000 job openings expected in the next five years. 

In this course you will learn basic skills including how to produce a simple garment, create patterns, sew designs and draw fashion sketches. You will study in a simulated workroom using industrial sewing machines and cutting edge equipment.

Completion of this course will give you direct entry into our higher certificates or Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising qualifications. Graduates will also be able to seek employment as a milliners assistant or fashion design assistant.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

You must be in your senior years of high school as well as meet the following criteria:

  • program selection must reflect your SET Plan options
  • academic achievement should support your selection - a pass in Year 10 Maths and English is highly recommended (if you do not have a pass achievement you will require a support plan from the school explaining how they will support you to successfully complete the program)
  • you must be enrolled, have regular attendance and remain in school for the duration of the program.
Resources required

You will be provided with a sewing kit. This incurs a non-refundable fee of $50 that must be paid at time of enrolment. All classes are held in simulated work environments, all students must wear closed in shoes, at all times, during class.

Assessment Methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
