Elevate your fashion career with this advanced dual qualification. Gain the technical and creative skills to work as a senior fashion designer. 

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, the number of people working as fashion, industrial and jewellery designers has seen very strong growth in the past few years. Growth in the sector is expected to remain steady with around 4,000 job openings expected over the next five years. 

In this course you'll gain specialist knowledge across the fashion design process — from fabric identification to design creation, production, and marketing and sales. During your final semester you'll exhibit your range to industry representatives and potential employers at our prestigious graduate fashion parades. Graduates will also finish their studies with a comprehensive portfolio of work.

Successful completion of this course will give you the specialised knowledge and skills required to work as a senior fashion designer or commercial textile designer.

Industry-standard facilities

Students have access to a lab fitted out with various industrial specialty and sewing machines, industrial irons and cutting tables. Pattern making studios and lecture rooms feature both communal tables and individual cubicles where students will have access to the latest digital design software.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

International students

  • English Language Proficiency: Academic IELTS 5.5 (no individual band less than 5.0) or ISLPR 2+ on all skills or other - View a list of all English Language tests accepted by TAFE Queensland International
  • Academic Requirements: Completion of Year 12 (or equivalent). Non school-leavers must have relevant work experience or qualification that indicates likely success of course completion. For more information on the international education achievement levels equivalent to Year 10 and 12.

Applicants should be a minimum of 17 years of age and turning 18 during the first year of study with TAFE Queensland. International students who are under 18 years of age and are applying for a student visa are required by the Australian Department of Home Affairs to have adequate welfare arrangements in place.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

You will be required to have access to and bring to class a Sewing Kit. Details will be provided after enrolment or during orientation. The purchase of this kit may incur additional costs of up to $175.

Please note: all students must wear closed in shoes during classes, as all classes are held in simulated work environments.

Please note that the Advanced Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising has 35 Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising units that are pre-requisites. You will only need to complete an extra 10 units under the pathway option to get the Advanced Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising.

Transition statement

Replacement qualification
This qualification has been replaced by MST50122 - Diploma of Apparel, Fashion and Textiles and MST60122 - Advanced Diploma of Apparel, Fashion and Textiles, as of 21 December 2022. A transition period applies to enable current students to complete their study. The transition period finishes on 20 December 2023.
