Course overview

Introduction to Building design is a short course designed to present general concepts related to building design, which would help you to have a broad insight about building design parameters.

The topics analysed in this course may assist at deciding if a career in building design suits you. Key topics covered are:

  1. Creating a 'Design Brief' - covering site analysis: location, orientation, infrastructure, legal compliance (council regulations), environmental, climate, etc.
  2. Building classification - Australia.
  3. Architectural styles - historical timeline, covering the prehistoric to post-modernisation periods.
  4. Construction methods.
  5. Revit and AutoCAD drafting - introductory level.

This short course is non-accredited therefore is not registered with the National Training Register.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

It is highly recommended that you have strong computer literacy skills, as you'll be using Revit and AutoCAD software on our TAFE PCs over the duration of this course.

Resources required

After enrolment:

  • For practising at home in between lessons (not mandatory) - you will need to download the Revit and AutoCAD 2023 student edition from the Autodesk website. You will be prompted to upload your Confirmation of Enrolment from TAFE that you received upon enrolment.  Please try and have this installed before your first lesson.

You will be required to bring the following to class:

  • personal stationery
  • a ruler
  • compass
  • 2 x triangle rulers
  • A protractor
  • 2B graphite pencils
  • A3 drawing paper
  • Triangular Scale Ruler (optional)

Please note:  There are no canteen facilities at Coomera over the weekend or in the evenings so you are advised to bring your own refreshments.
