Course overview

Develop the knowledge and practical skills required to work as a translator or interpreter in a range of contexts. This course is made up of select units from the Diploma of Interpreting (LOTE-English) (PSP50916) and will prepare you to meet the English proficiency and training requirements for the new NAATI Certification tests.

Discover how to keep work records, develop glossaries for translating and interpreting assignments, source suitable reference material, efficiently use tools and equipment, prepare effective work plans, minimise risks from miscommunication, and manage the physical setting and pace of communication. You'll also study the industry's professional codes of ethics, learn to consider a range of ethical issues, and continuously develop professional practice.

This course will give you a solid foundation of the skills required to work in translation or interpreting across a range of industries.

Selection criteria

It is recommended you have IELTS 6.0 or equivalent in speaking and listening or have completed a pre-course English proficiency test prior to enrolment.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

You will be provided with a recommended reading list and/or required textbooks during orientation or at the start of each unit. The purchase of these resources may incur additional costs up the value of $40 or you may be able to borrow them from the TAFE Queensland library network.
