This course will prepare you with the background knowledge and skills in biology required to study a degree in health science or biological sciences.
This preparatory course highlights the basic concepts of biology and will help you build the skills required to be successful in obtaining a health science or biological sciences degree. This course is equivalent to Year 11/12 Biology. The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) has recognised this course as eligible to contribute 4 credits to a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) on successful completion.
This course explores modern biology by considering the structure and function of biological systems at various levels across a range of biological subjects. It has a focus on the workings of the human body — from cells through to organ systems. You'll develop an understanding of cell theory, the role of nucleic acids (DNA/RNA), genetics and inheritance, homeostasis, evolution, DNA technology, ecology and population, and human anatomy.
Successful completion of this course will give you the skills and knowledge you need to confidently approach tertiary studies in any of the biology disciplines or allied health programs. This course also fulfils the primary education requirement for science.

Purchasing the Biology textbook is not a requirement as there is an alternative, online version available in the online classroom. However, many students benefit from having the hardcopy. This can be purchased via the QLD Textbook Warehouse. To find the book, change the Search By to ISBN Number and type “UNL44” in the search field on the website homepage. It is called “Biology 2e UNILEARN Custom Book".
