Course overview

This course has been developed to prepare you to write essays and research reports at a tertiary level. It focuses on developing the communication and written skills necessary to succeed in university environments. 

Throughout this course you will discover what academic writing is. You'll learn practical skills including how to recognise key ideas, effectively summarise and note take, organise and communicate ideas clearly, constructively edit your work, and correctly reference articles, journals, and internet resources.

Successful completion of this course is equivalent to Year 11/12 English Communication. Some universities may accept this course as equivalent to Year 11/12 English (please check with your university first before enrolling). The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) has recognised this course as eligible to contribute 3 credits to a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) on successful completion.

Selection criteria

Unilearn has assumed that by enrolling into an online unit you are familiar with computers and are able to use programs such as Word, Excel and Adobe Reader as well as complete simple tasks such as the Save-As function, attaching a file, saving a low resolution image and inserting images and working with tables within Word documents.

Resources Required

Purchasing the Academic Literacy Skills textbook is not a requirement as there is an online version available in the online classroom.  However, many students benefit from having the hardcopy.  This can be purchased via the QLD Textbook Warehouse (http://www.qtw.com.au).  Type “UNL11ALS” in the search field at the top of their website homepage.

  • Open for continuous enrolment.​
  • Unilearn is completed via Connect. Delivered entirely online.  Self-paced. Once enrolled, students will have access within 48 hours for their course materials.
    • Max. 2 units per enrolment.
  • Cap of 2 units per enrolment is due to time requirements of each unit and student dedication. Each unit consists of two years of study condensed into one. Students enrolled in 2 units are essentially studying four years’ worth of content within a 12 month enrolment period.
  • Unit duration: 12 months from the enrolment date.
  • Our units are registered with QCAA so they count towards your QCE*
  • Students must have an existing learning account with QCAA and have at least one existing credit in order to use Unilearn units to accumulate credits towards a QCE.
  • It is the responsibility of the student to check with their preferred University that our course meets their prerequisite requirements prior to enrolment
  • Minimum study time is 18 weeks – no exceptions
  • Completing our individual courses will not achieve or improve a QTAC rank or OP.
