Course overview

Rings are a type of jewellery that come in many forms and designs. Increasingly popular with both women and men, they are wonderful gifts as well as a reminder of important people and moments in our lives.

If you are fascinated by these beautiful finger jewels, come and learn all you need to be able to make them at home for pleasure or to sell at local markets or online. When you finish this course you will have a great range of ring making skills and a collection of unique silver rings to take home.

Topics covered in this course include:

Week 1: Basic health and safety training and core ring making skills

  • Demonstrations: sizing, annealing and soldering for wire rings
  • Exercise: you will be working on acquisition of core ring making techniques, such as using ring sizers, operating a gas torch and soldering

Week 2: Ring stacks

  • Demonstrations: making a ring stack using sterling silver wire and creating textures on the surface of rings
  • Exercise: you will start working on your ring stack (set of 3)

Week 3: Ring stacks (continued)

  • Demonstrations: attaching decorative components to rings
  • Exercise: you will continue working on completing your ring stacks

Week 4: Classic ring bands (wedders)

  • Demonstrations: sizing, soldering and forming a classic ‘wedder’ 
  • Exercise: you will make a classic ring band using your newly learned skills

Week 5: Open rings (wrap around rings and thumb rings)

  • Demonstrations: working out a correct length of metal for open ‘wrap around’ ring, basic metal forming and forging techniques
  • Exercise: you will make a forged wrap around ring from silver wire

Week 6: Open rings (continued thumb ring)

  • Demonstrations: creating a template and working out a correct length or metal for an open thumb ring
  • Exercise: you will work on your thumb rings or finishing your previous ring making exercises

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

It is recommended that you have previously completed our Silversmithing: Basics course, or have equivalent knowledge, however this is not mandatory and you can choose to enrol if you are a beginner.

Resources Required
  • You will require fully enclosed shoes, a note pad, a ruler, a pencil, a fine felt tip pen (preferably permanent marker for metal), a glue stick, scissors and an apron.
  • Please note: there are no canteen facilities at Coomera or Ashmore after hours, so you are encouraged to bring your own refreshments.

Your enrolment fee includes course supplies provided at each class by the teacher which are non-refundable.
