Course overview

Increase your qualifications and job prospects with this dual award and get the skills you need to launch your career in the fashion industry. This course will qualify you to use your skills in fashion design and technology as a milliner, fashion design worker, or dressmaker.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, the number of people working as fashion, industrial and jewellery designers grew very strongly during the past five years. Growth in the sector is expected to remain steady with around 4,000 job openings expected in the next five years.

In this course you'll learn basic skills including how to draw fashion sketches, create patterns, sew designs, and produce a simple garment. You'll then build on these skills and learn how to identify fibres, fabrics and textiles, and use electronic fashion design tools. Our highly experienced and passionate teaching team have years of industry experience and will give you the one-on-one guidance needed to prepare you for a career in fashion.

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to seek a number of hands-on roles in clothing production, fashion, and textile design. It will also prepare you with the core skills needed to undertake further study in this field.

Industry-standard facilities

Our custom-built fashion facilities include multiple learning spaces designed to encourage hands-on, collaborative work. Students have access to a lab fitted out with various industrial sewing machines, irons and cutting tables. Pattern making studios and lecture rooms feature both communal tables and individual cubicles where students will have access to the latest digital design software.

Further study options

Take your studies further. Successful completion of this course will see you graduate with a portfolio of garment samples and the opportunity to transition straight into second semester of the Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising (MST50119). This will enable you to commence your diploma-to-degree pathway option.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Resources required

You will be provided with a sewing kit. This incurs a non-refundable fee of $150 that must be paid at time of enrolment.

Need to know

TAFE at Schools
If you require up to 8 QCE points, you'll need to enrol into the MST30819 - Certificate III in Applied Fashion Design and Technology, one year TAFE at Schools program only.
