Course overview

Portuguese is the Girl from Ipanema and Rio de Janeiro language! It is all around the Brazilian Amazon forest and is spoken by renowned soccer players as King Pelé, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar. Portuguese is the mother language of great navigators and writers from Portugal. It is also spoken in the stunning coastline of the Cape Verde archipelago as well as in Mozambique, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Timor-Leste, Equatorial Guinea, São Tomé and Principe and the Chinese autonomous territory of Macau. More than 265 million people speak Portuguese on the planet.

5 May is the "World Portuguese Language Day". According to UNESCO, “Portuguese remains, today, a major language of international communication and a language with a strong geographical projection, destined to increase”. (https://www.unesco.org/en/days/portuguese-language-day)

The aim of this course is to provide an introductory study in the vocabulary and structures of Portuguese and to develop a functional level of communicative proficiency. Students will also be introduced to various aspects of the society and culture of Portuguese-speaking nations.

Why study Portuguese at TAFE?

We know that learning another language extends, diversifies and enriches people’s cognitive, social and linguistic development. Studying a foreign language is to travel to a new speaking-world and to connect with new gastronomy, music, clothing, stories and more. Also, literacy skills acquired in another language always enhance skills in one’s first language.

No previous knowledge is required. Aimed at beginners, Portuguese Conversation - Level 1 seeks to develop all the basic language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The emphasis throughout will be on communicative skills both oral and written.

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • Correctly recognise, pronounce and use a wide variety of vocabulary
  • Understand and use the basic structures of the Portuguese grammar
  • Read and understand basic documents
  • Write complete sentences and short paragraphs
  • Use internet and other sources to follow up on Portuguese language and culture
