Course overview

This six-week short course focuses on advanced bookbinding techniques to produce three unique hardcover books and different box casings to keep them in. Construction techniques will include the closed-case, traditional straight stitch book with a slip case, an open-bound single sheet Coptic stitch book with a candy box case, and a double-needle Coptic stitch book in a single clam shell case.

Bespoke books make a unique gift for anyone or are hand-made something special you create for yourself as a journal, notebook, or go-anywhere sketchbook.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Use traditional binding equipment
  • Measure & cut book pages and book covers accurately
  • Create signature (sections) and hand sew the book block
  • Work with adhesives, paper, and cloth to create unique covers
  • Learn the stitching techniques for creating three book types
  • Measure, cut, cover, and construct three different box casings

Some skills in bookmaking is required – or just an adventurous spirit. Enjoy being in the company of others and learn new skills that can be used into the future.
