Get qualified to volunteer your services to your community as a Justice of the Peace (JP) with this accredited skill set. 

This course will prepare you to perform a number of judicial duties including witnessing formal documents and hearing certain types of court matters. You will learn how to certify a true copy of an original document, administer oaths and affirmations, and witness documents, statutory declarations, and affidavits. You will also discover how to issue search warrants, grant bail, and issue arrest warrants.

Upon successful completion of this course you'll be able to make an application to the Department of Justice and Attorney-General — Justices of the Peace Branch for appointment as a Justice of the Peace (Qualified).

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

If you have the intention to apply to become a Commissioner for Declarations or Justice of the Peace (Qualified) you must meet the minimum eligibility criteria set out in the Justices of the Peace and Commissioners for Declarations Act 1991 prior to enrolling, which includes the following:

  • hold Australian Citizenship (by birth or grant);
  • be 18 years of age;
  • be on the Queensland electoral roll; and
  • have no criminal convictions.
