Course overview

Kick start your career in information and communications technology (ICT) with this entry-level qualification from TAFE Queensland. Get the hands-on skills for the role you want with both a generalist stream and specialised streams in applications, network administration, support, and website technologies.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, the number of people working as ICT support technicians is expected to continue to grow very strongly over the coming years. This very large occupation is likely to see around 62,000 job openings over the next five years.

General stream
Within the general stream you'll develop a broad range of practical skills and discover your specialist interests. Covering general programming, networking and web technologies you'll also learn how to create user documentation, run standard diagnostic tests, and install and optimise operating system software.

Applications stream
The applications stream will prepare you to work in ICT support roles updating operating systems with the latest technology fixes. You'll develop skills to become an advanced user of Microsoft Office with a focus on Word, Excel, and Access. You'll also learn to analyse, design, and review software applications, manipulate data, as well as develop and write code.

Network administration stream
The network administration stream will teach you how to set up home or small office networks, diagnose and action network problems, and install and manage protocols. You'll be qualified to work as an ICT technician managing home or office networks.

Support stream
Choosing the support stream will give you the skills you need to work as an ICT help desk operator. You'll discover how to care for computer hardware, provide ICT advice to clients, and provide basic system administration support.

Website technologies stream
The website technologies stream will prepare you to work as an ICT technician building and maintaining websites. You'll learn how to use social media tools, produce images for the web, and build, review and maintain simple websites.
