Gain skills in the latest design and manufacturing technology with this apprenticeship qualification. Become a trade-qualified patternmaker and progress your career in engineering design and fabrication.

You will gain transferable skills in design and manufacturing that are highly sought after in a broad range of industries including engineering, mining and construction.

This course will provide you with the skills to produce wooden, plastic, metal and polystyrene patterns, that are used in the production of moulds for cast metal products in the mining, rail and automotive industries. You will learn how to determine metal shrinkage and work with timber and resins, perform computer-aided design, computer-aided manufacturing and computer numerical control (CNC) manual techniques. Our highly-experienced, industry-respected teachers will ensure you are up-to-date with the latest technology including utilisation of 3D printing equipment.

Successful completion of this course will allow you to become a trade qualified patternmaker and continue your career in design and fabrication.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

To study an apprenticeship or traineeship program you must be indentured as an apprentice or trainee with your employer.

Employers need to be able to provide the necessary human and physical resources to qualify for an apprentice.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes. This includes the use of safety glasses, protective footwear with covered uppers, steel capped toes and non-slip soles to AS2210, leather gloves to AS2161, and hair protection. You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing.

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

Assessment Methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
