Course overview

Progress your career as a pharmacy assistant. Develop a broad range of knowledge and skills which will allow you to confidently provide advice and assistance to customers.

There will continue to be strong growth in the pharmacy industry due to the ageing population and the renewed focus of personal health and well-being in the community. This is projected to drive the demand for qualified pharmacy assistants over the next five years, with an estimate that up to 50,000 job openings will be made available across Australia by the end of 2019.

During this course you will develop a broad range of skills and knowledge which will enable you to identify and meet customer needs. You will learn to assist customers with prescriptions and supply pharmacy medicines in line with with federal, state and territory law, and the Pharmacy Board of Australia Guidelines. Choose from a range of elective unit streams including customer service, retail procedures, beauty products and services, skin services, dispensary, product advice, anatomy and physiology, diversity, inventory, merchandising and workplace effectiveness. Industry experienced teachers will provide all the support and guidance you need to succeed.

Successful completion of the course will qualify you to work as a pharmacy assistant. You will be equipped to provide technical advice and support to other team members and will be able to work independently, under the direction of the supervising pharmacist.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

Students must be at least 16 years of age prior to the start date of this program and have successfully completed year 10 (or equivalent), or have relevant experience and/or qualifications that indicate likely success in completing the course.

To study an apprenticeship or traineeship program you must be indentured as an apprentice or trainee with your employer.
Employers need to be able to provide the necessary human and physical resources to qualify for an apprentice.

No specific resources are required to successfully complete this course.

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Need to know

Work Experience: You are required to secure your own work experience at a Pharmacy prior to the commencement of your course.

Approximately 200 hours is required for this program, unless you are employed in a Pharmacy for the duration of the course.

You must have regular, consistent work experience to provide the opportunity to apply your skills and knowledge being learnt and to allow the Pharmacist or Supervisor to observe and verify this.

Assessment Methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
