Course overview

Set yourself on the path to gaining a drainer's licence with this entry-level course. Develop the practical skills and knowledge to perform routine tasks to maintain stormwater, drainage and sewerage systems.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, there is strong future job growth predicted for drainage, sewerage and stormwater labourers. Employers are looking for qualified candidates who are reliable, physically fit, and have a strong work ethic. 

You will develop basic skills in how to plan, install, repair, maintain and test below-ground sanitary drainage and stormwater, as well as levelling and the installation of domestic treatment plants. Our courses are taught by trade-qualified teachers and endorsed by industry. Our large-scale training spaces replicate commercial and residential settings to deliver a "real-world" training experience.

On successful completion of this course you will have the skills to perform routine tasks to maintain stormwater, drainage and sewerage systems. You will also be eligible to apply to the Plumbing Industry Council for an interim drainer's licence. This licence will increase your prospects of gaining employment as a drainer.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

You will require the following:

  • Year 10 or equivalent, and
  • you must be working in the Drainage industry and working under the supervision of a Licensed Drainer / Plumber Drainer.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes. If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

You be required to supply the following items at your own cost: 

  • Eye protection - safety glasses or clip-ons where prescription glasses are normally worn (must conform to the Australian Standard 1336 or 1337)
  • protective footwear with safety toe cap and non-slip soles to AS2210
  • Protective clothing - appropriate work wear (no sleeveless shirts or singlets)
  • Ear protection - as directed - ear muffs or ear plugs (recommended)
  • Disposable dust masks/respiratory aids as directed (recommended)

Important information

You will be required to complete:

  • four clusters of units + 9 additional stand alone units (total of 18 units); and
  • a theory and practical assessment (log book) component for each cluster.
