Expand your knowledge with this intermediate course in library and information services. Develop the specialised skills and knowledge needed to work as a senior library assistant. While the world is turning digital, libraries have a solid foundation in the community as they evolve with the times, providing vital services in computer access, language courses, and partnerships that connect a diverse range of people with education.

You will gain the specialised skills necessary to coordinate public programs, search and analyse information, provide leadership and guidance to others,and provide customer assistance. You will also develop technical skills in the use of library cataloging tools, website maintenance, and the use of internal and external networks for sourcing information. You will also skills that are transferable to a number of different industries including library, information and cultural services, giving you greater employment opportunities. At TAFE Queensland our teachers are experts in their fields, meaning you gain valuable knowledge from people who live and breath the industry.

On successful completion of this program you will be qualified as a senior library assistant. This course also provides you with the foundation knowledge for higher education.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

Year 10 or equivalent   

Vocational placement

If you are not currently working in a library or information organisation, during your course you will be required to complete vocational placement. This is important so you can start practicing your new skills in a real-world environment. You’ll be required to work shifts determined by your placement provider. TAFE Queensland may be able to assist in arranging suitable placements.

Completing placement is compulsory, and you will be expected to manage family and work commitments in order to complete your shifts. You are required to complete 15 working days of placement to satisfy this component of your qualification.

Need to know

When studying online it is strongly recommended students follow the preferred order of study and enrol in no more than two units per intake, unless otherwise advised. 

Assessment Methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
