Develop the practical skills and basic knowledge required to become an electrical rail lines or rail traction powerline worker. Get your foot in the door to a growing industry with up to 5,000 jobs expected over the next five years for electrical trades workers.

In this course you will learn how to safely install, maintain, and inspect overhead poles, structures, conductors, cables, and rail traction wiring systems. You will also gain skills in the installation and maintenance of overhead traction configuration and bonds, as well as the operation of rail traction height access equipment. Our industry experienced teachers will provide you will the one-on-one support and guidance you need to succeed.

Upon successful completion of this course you will be qualified to work as an electrical rail lines or rail traction powerline worker. You will also be prepared to complete additional study to enhance your career prospects.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

Sound Achievement in Year 10 English and Maths or equivalent is recommended.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes. This includes the use of safety glasses, protective footwear with covered uppers, steel capped toes and non-slip soles to AS2210, leather gloves to AS2161, and hair protection. You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing.

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

Assessment Methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
