Course overview

TAFE will enable you to support and teach non-English speaking clients in the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP). The new TAFE Volunteer Tutor Training course (TVTT) is an online training course that will give you the skills and knowledge needed to tutor clients from a non-English speaking background.

This fully funded program is available for anyone looking to develop some new skills while supporting migrants and refugees with their English language learning to help with their transition to life in Australia.

What's involved?

Participate ... in online course for 5 weeks (15-20 hours in total)

  • Learn about cultural awareness, identifying a client's needs, how to prepare and deliver volunteer ESL tutoring to clients, and the basic principles of communicative language teaching
  • Be guided and supported through the online learning experience by a facilitator (Home Tutor Coordinator)

Attend a face-to-face induction session (2 hours, held in the final week of the course)

  • Complete important paperwork
  • Meet other volunteer tutors and the Home Tutor Coordinator
  • Ask any questions or address other practical tutoring issues

Gain practical tutoring skills

  • Observe experienced ESL teachers
  • Put some of your new skills into practice in a supportive classroom environment

Stay involved as a volunteer tutor in the AMEP for 12 months following completion of the program

  • Visit the learner in their own home or another convenient location for 1 hour a week

Upon successful completion of the course you may be able to volunteer in AMEP. To volunteer you must attend a face-to-face session where you will need to complete an application form and consent to a (free) criminal history check. You will also be made aware of your rights and responsibilities while engaging in volunteer work with TAFE Queensland East Coast
