Take your career in engineering to the next level with this advanced qualification. This course is primarily for people with existing engineering trade qualifications and will give you the technical skills and knowledge required to work as a qualified welder.
Job opportunities for structural steel and welding trades workers are strong with over 70,000 people employed in this industry in 2015. This course will give you the hands on skills you need to work in a range of manufacturing, construction, and professional, scientific and technical services.
In this course you will develop the theoretical knowledge and practical skills in welding to meet the requirements of statutory authorities and industry demands for quality assurance. You will learn how to perform welds to code standards using gas tungsten, manual metal, and gas metal arc welding processes.
Successful completion of this course will give you the skills and knowledge required to obtain your welding qualifications AS1796 (certification level).
The successful achievement of this skill set requires you to complete one unit of competency correlating to your type of welding application from the list below.

- SSMEM0003 Basic Welding or SSMEM0021 Introduction to Welding
- SSMEM0017 Welding Theory
- SSMEM0022 Pre-requisite for Intermediate Welding
- SSMEM0018 Welding Intermediate Practical
- SSMEM0023 Prerequisite for Advanced Welding
- SSMEM0016 Welding Advanced Practical

Please note: there are a number of different welding certificates and you must enrol into the appropriate unit that aligns to the certificate type you wish to obtain.
For Practical Classes:
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
PPE listed below not supplied by TAFE Queensland
- safety glasses - students must wear these at all times in the workshop or any eye hazard area as specified by the teacher
- Oxy Googles - (must be shade 5 lenses)
- Welding Helmet - ( must be shade 10 or 11 lenses)
- protective footwear - covered uppers, capped toe’s and non-slip shoes to AS2210
- Gauntlet welding gloves – long leather gloves to AS2161
- hair protection - long hair (i.e. hair below collar length) must be restrained (hat, headband, or hair tie) within the workshop environment
- clothing - overalls or long cotton trousers and a long sleeved cotton drill shirt are required to be worn at all times when undertaking practical training
For Theory Classes:
- Protective Clothing - clean and neat for example: shorts and T-shirt (No torn sleeveless shirts, no t-shirts with offensive logos/print or singlet permitted)
- Protective footwear must be worn into the classroom for example enclosed shoes or work boots. (No open shoes are to be worn into the class for example thongs or slip on shoes)
Students failing to meet these minimum standards of dress will not be permitted entry to practical classes.
