Course overview

This course covers the skills and knowledge necessary to undertake the external examination required to obtain a Long Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (LROCP) issued by the Office of Maritime Communications (OMC).

If you intend travelling on offshore coastal voyages, or are applying to AMSA for a Certificate of Competence as a Coxswain, Master < 24 or Master < 35, you should obtain an LROCP Certificate which incorporates knowledge of both Medium Frequency/High Frequency (MF/HF) Radios, designed for long range transmission, and VHF radios.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

Students must be 16 years of age, have a minimum of year 10 with a sound achievement in English and Mathematics or the equivalent, or gain mature age entry.

Resources required

Please be aware you will need to provide the following additional items at your cost:

  • An examination fee of $89.00 for the written test (cheques or money orders should be made payable to the University of Tasmania or credit card facility is available)
  • One current passport photo
  • A notebook and pen are required for theory components.

Attire is to be of current industry standard with enclosed footwear to be worn at all times.

Need to know

One current passport size photo for the radio license application must be brought with you to class.
