Course overview

Gain the skills and knowledge required to seek an apprenticeship within the painting and decorating industry

This non-accredited two week course provides extensive hands-on training and on-site industry work experience.

Gain skills in:

  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Use of basic tools, equipment and materials
  • Surface preparation
  • Brush and roll application

As part of this course, students also complete the accredited unit of competency: Work Safely in the Construction Industry (CPCCWHS1001) to obtain their White Card.  A White Card is mandatory for anyone wanting to work in the construction industry.

There is a high demand for painting and decorating apprentices with employers seeking students who already have the basic skills and knowledge.

Painters and Decorators can choose to work in the mainstream domestic, commercial and industrial sectors or branch out with the employment opportunities from applying decorative paint finishes, texture coating industrial protective coatings to hanging wallpaper.

Selection criteria

Direct entry, year 10 or equivalent.

If you're under 17 years of age, special enrolment conditions may apply.

Resources required

MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS:

  • Steel capped safety boots, hi vis shirt and long trousers
  • Car and licence (for travel to and from construction sites)

Assessment Methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
