Do you want to develop some front office / reception knowledge so you can work in a hotel or resort?  Then this program is for you either for newcomers to the hospitality industry or existing workers looking to diversify their skills.

This specialised short course covers two units from the Certificate III in Hospitality.  The main focus of this short course is around using industry standard computerised accommodation booking systems [OPERA].

For the broader range of skills to work in Hotel and Resort front office, the SIT30616 Certificate III in Hospitality (Accommodation services) is suggested.

In the course you will use one of the industry's computerised accommodation booking systems [OPERA Fidelio].  You'll learn about using OPERA for accommodation bookings, receiving and processing reservations and managing multiple reservations.  Topics include:

  • Working on the front desk of hotels, motels and serviced apartments
  • Professional personal presentation
  • Meeting guest expectations
  • Understanding guests' needs and expectations
  • Dealing with difficult guests
  • Computer system - Opera (reservations, check-in and check-out, reports, room allocation, special requests and processing financial transactions)

Selection criteria

There are no entry requirements outlined in the National Training Package, however, TAFE Queensland requires the following entry requirements be met:

  • Basic computer skills (& able to use a computer keyboard quickly and efficiently)

 And either

  • Completed Year 10 or equivalent with sound achievement in English, or
  • Mature age with sound language, literacy, and numeracy skills

Resources required

No specific resources are required to successfully complete this course.

It is recommended that students have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.
