Tinker Labs are practical workshops to develop valuable skills in IoT. We introduce new tools and skills that are used by those in; STEM, Makers, DIY’s, Engineers, Designers, Startups, Inventors, and Creators in general.

This Lab will introduce the amazing Firebase platform, for rapid application development. Progress Web Applications (PWA) are fast to develop and work across all platforms; PC, iOS, Android, others.

We will setup and deploy a single page application using Firebase hosting.  We will be introducing some Javascript and HTML, all demonstrated on the Raspberry Pi.

This course is a must for anyone involved in the following; STEM’s, computing, IoT, electronics, security systems, home automation, robotics, teaching, automation.

Selection criteria

Completion of Fundamentals of IoT - the Internet of Things is highly recommended.

Completion of Introduction to Javascript.

Completion of Introduction to the Raspberry Pi, or existing Raspberry Pi experience.

An understanding of Information Systems is beneficial but not essential. 

An ability to use computers and internet browsers essential.

Participants should be comfortable with learning technical jargon.

Resources required

Recommend using the preloaded Raspberry Pi (Tinker Labs Pi Kit) from previous Labs.  Otherwise TAFE Queensland computer workstations or own laptops can be utilised for this class.

This will be held in our computer workshops, with internet connectivity available for exercises.

It is recommended that students have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Assessment Methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
