Course overview

This short course will teach you computer aided design (CAD) skills applicable to the fields of mechanical, electrical/electronic, fabrication, and fluid power. This course will introduce you to the CAD environment and teach you how to create 2D drawings using a computer aided design system.

You'll learn essential skills including how to prepare and customise the CAD environment through the use of macros, menus, and default settings. From there you'll discover how to create 2D drawings from 3D models, produce output including linked bills of materials, and save files in industry-standard formats including IGES, DXF, and HPGL.

Selection criteria

Prior to entry into this qualification, you must have completed the following two pre-requisite units:

  • MEM09002B Interpret technical drawing
  • MEM16008A Interact with computing technology

If the above units are not currently held then they can be integrated into the course of study and require enrolment. 

You will also be required to have drawing skills and basic computer skills.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes. This includes the use of safety glasses, protective footwear with covered uppers, steel capped toes and non-slip soles to AS2210, and hair protection. You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing. You may also be required to have access to a welding helmet and welding gloves. If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

You are also required to bring a personal stationary, a USB, a scientific calculator, a metric ruler, scale rule, set squares, protractor, and french curves or flexible ruler (optional).

Assessment Methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
