Course overview

Course overview

This preparatory course highlights the basic concepts of biology and will help you build the skills required to be successful in obtaining a health science or biological sciences degree. This course is registered with the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) as an authority course, is equivalent to Year 11/12 Biology, and can give you four credits towards your Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).

This course explores modern biology by considering the structure and function of biological systems at various levels across a range of biological subjects. It has a focus on the workings of the human body — from cells through to organ systems. You'll develop an understanding of cell theory, the role of nucleic acids (DNA/RNA), genetics and inheritance, homeostasis, evolution, DNA technology, ecology and population, and human anatomy.

Successful completion of this course will give you the skills and knowledge you need to confidently approach tertiary studies in any of the biology disciplines or allied health programs. This course also fulfills the primary education requirement for science.

Enrolling means that you are committing yourself to study, and to paying the associated fees. The tuition fees and applicable charges are required to be paid at enrolment or by scheduled instalment dates either by yourself, a nominated third party (e.g. your employer), or as identified within a contract for delivery of TAFE Queensland training.

Selection criteria

Unilearn has assumed that by enrolling into an online unit you are familiar with computers and are able to use programs such as Word, Excel and Adobe Reader as well as complete simple tasks such as the Save-As function, attaching a file, saving a low resolution image and inserting images and working with tables within Word documents.

Resources required

Purchasing the Biology textbook is not a requirement as there is an alternative, online version available in the online classroom.  However, many students benefit from having the hardcopy.  This can be purchased via the QLD Textbook Warehouse (http://www.qtw.com.au).  Type “UNL44BIO” in the search field at the top of their website homepage.  It is called “Biology: An Australian Perspective”.

Need to know

Unilearn is completed via Connect. Delivered entirely online.  Self- paced. Once enrolled, students will have access within 48 hours for their course materials.

  • Our units are registered with QCAA so they count towards your QCE*
    • Students must have an existing learning account with QCAA and have at least one existing credit in order to use Unilearn units to accumulate credits towards a QCE.
  • It is the responsibility of the student to check with their preferred University that our course meets their prerequisite requirements prior to enrolment
  • Minimum study time is 18 weeks – no exceptions
  • Completing our individual courses will not achieve or improve a QTAC rank or OP.
  • The Exam for each unit is not included in the cost of the unit (payable once all coursework has been completed). See below
