The WSET® Level 1 Award in Wines is a globally recognised certification designed to provide an easy to understand introduction to the main types and styles of wine.

The WSET® Level 1 Award in Wines is your passport to a world of confidence and enjoyment. This globally recognised certification is designed for those with no prior knowledge of wine, offering an engaging and accessible way to understand the main types and styles of wines.

Through interactive sessions you’ll explore wines by sight, smell and taste, learning to identify key characteristics. The WSET® Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting will equip you to describe wines in a structured way, making it easier to share your thoughts with others.

This course is best suited to a range of people, from wine enthusiasts who wish to deepen their appreciation through to hospitality and retail professionals searching to broaden and formalise their knowledge.

Course content includes:

  • Hands-on experience: Explore the major wine styles through tastings of 6 carefully chosen samples
  • Tasting techniques: Master the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting – a proven method for analysing wines
  • Grape knowledge: Discover the characteristics of the common grape varieties and how they impact the final product
  • Wine service essentials: Learn proper handling and storage techniques
  • Safety First: Health, safety and legal issues surrounding alcohol
  • Food and wine pairing: Unlock the secrets to creating perfect pairings
  • Globally recognised certification: Upon passing the exam, you’ll receive a WSET Level 1 Award in Wines certificate and lapel pin

Assessment is conducted at the end of the learning day, with a closed-book exam of 30 multiple-choice questions, a passing grade of 70% or more is needed.

Study Hours:

This qualification has a minimum requirement of 6 hours of study time in the classroom with a WSET course provider. TAFE Queensland recommends students participate in the revision activities available to you on Connect once enrolled to help increase your chance of success in the qualification.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

Participants need to be 18 years or older to comply with the liquor service requirements of the Queensland Liquor Act. Proof of Age will be required.

Resources required

All study materials, 6 wines samples and examination fees are included in the course price. Printed study materials can be picked up prior to the course from South Bank TAFE campus.
