Course overview

This 6 hour taster course is for absolute beginners. It is designed to allow students the opportunity to learn enough so that they can decide if a career in CAD might suit them, or before proceeding with further training.

AutoCAD is the world leader in Computer Aided Design, and is used in all industries and all disciplines where accurate plans are needed.

AutoCAD can be used by anyone; it is not conditional upon gender or age.

Students are shown the capabilities of this program, which include architectural plans, engineering plans, manufacturing plans, product design plans, landscape plans, and more, either in 2D or 3D.

You will be shown the fundamentals, and a number of drawings, and you will be able to complete certain exercises yourself.

Career opportunities are discussed, which include self-employment, engineering, architecture and others. Working with AutoCAD as a career is interesting, clean and is usually undertaken indoors.

If you would like to learn AutoCAD at a deeper level, it is recommended you enrol in AutoCAD - Level 1.

Selection criteria

  • This is a beginner’s course however prerequisites are that you have solid experience using applications on a PC or Mac and are capable of navigating around your computer, saving files and have an understanding of folder structure.
  • This course requires a solid understanding of computers, importing, locating and opening files on a PC platform.
  • It is also required that students have a working knowledge of the internet.
  • Students must have solid computer skills using Windows before enrolling in this course as they will use computers running Windows in class.

Resources required

  • Please bring a pen and paper for note taking and a memory stick/USB flash drive for saving your work and taking your files home.
  • Please note: There are no canteen facilities at Coomera over the weekend so students are advised to bring their own refreshments.

You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
