Course overview

This course will prepare you with the prerequisite knowledge required to move on to an intermediate-level welding skill set. 

You'll gain experience safely using hand and power tools required for a variety of general engineering applications. You'll also learn how to perform engineering measurements using mechanical measuring devices. By the end of the course, you'll be able to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements, use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and select, use, maintain and store appropriate engineering tools and equipment. 

Successful completion of this course will equip you with the essential knowledge and skills required to enrol in an intermediate welding skill set.

Selection criteria

You must have successfully completed units from the following skill sets (or equivalent) to gain entry to this course.

SSMEM0003 Basic Welding​ or SSMEM0021 Introduction to Welding
- SSMEM0017 Welding Theory

Please note that these will incur additional costs.

Resources required

Protective clothing appropriate to the engineering, including:

  • long sleeve cotton drill shirt
  • long cotton drill trousers or jeans
  • steel capped boots
  • clear safety glasses
  • welding shield and shade lens (either 10 or 11) - please note that if you wear glasses, you may require a magnifying lens (these generally range from 1.5 to 2.5)
  • oxy goggles are required for units involving oxy cutting
  • personal stationery (pen and paper)

You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
