Course overview

Start your career in the sport and recreation industry with this entry-level qualification. This course will prepare you to work in a range of operational and customer support positions in fitness centres, community recreation centres, sporting grounds or complexes, and leisure or aquatic centres.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, there is very strong future growth predicted for people working as recreation officers. Employers are looking for qualified candidates who are organised, mature, and can communicate well. 

This hands-on course will teach you how to provide first aid, assist with activity sessions, and work effectively in sport, fitness and recreation environments. You'll also learn how to plan and conduct programs, use social media tools for collaboration and engagement, promote programs and services, and respond to client complaints. Our industry-experienced teachers will provide you with all the support you need to succeed.

Successful completion of this qualification will qualify you to enter the industry as a leisure services officer, recreation officer, activity operation officer, or community activities officer. You'll also be well suited to continue your studies in this area.

Placement

Vocational placement will take place onsite within our gym facility over the duration of the course.

Resources required

A student uniform will be supplied.

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

You are also required to bring your own sports clothing and sports shoes, a gym towel and water bottle.

Need to know

In order for you to have a successful outcome and due to the structure of the course, attendance needs to be high.

If you are required to leave class early, you must have written consent from your parent or guardian before you can be released by the teacher.

Assessment Methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
