Statement of Participation
Develop the basic skills and knowledge you will need to gain an apprenticeship with this introductory carpentry short course.
There is a strong demand for qualified carpenters with up to 50,000 job openings expected over the next five years. Increased specialisation within the construction industry means that you will be well-placed for employment if you continue to and complete an apprenticeship.
In a range of settings as an apprentice, you will learn to use carpentry tools, equipment and materials, and learn many skills including; site set-out, wall and roof framing, cladding, lining and finishing skills, assemble partitions, finish category 1 and 2 wet areas, fix plasterboard to walls and ceilings, install cast ornamental cornice and much more.
During this course you will also learn about occupational health and safety and develop an understanding of the building and construction industry structure, work organisation and possible career pathways. This intensive two week course provides hands-on training delivered by industry experienced teachers with on-site industry work experience.
Upon successful completion of this short course, you will be well-placed to seek an apprenticeship in the construction industry.

Courses delivered on campus may have a combination of online and classroom based learning. Students are expected to undertake additional personal study to complete the course requirements.

It is highly recommended that you have:
You will undertake one week of work experience and it will be arranged for you by TAFE Queensland teachers who are well connected with their industries.
You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes. This includes the use of protective footwear with covered uppers, steel capped toes and non-slip soles to AS2210 (no Volleys). You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing. If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.
To further your employability opportunities, it is strongly recommended that you also enrol into the Construction Industry White Card Skill Set for an additional fee. This course can be completed during the first week of your training.
This course is not intended for hobbyist carpenter, it is to determine suitability for an apprenticeship.
Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
