Course overview

Develop the basic skills and knowledge needed to gain an apprenticeship with this introductory painting and decorating short course.

According to the Australian Government “Australian Jobs 2019” report, employment growth in the construction industry is projected to grow by 10% or by approximately 113,000 jobs over the next 5 years (until 2023). Construction is a large employing industry and a significant number of new jobs have been added in recent years. In particular, technicians and trade workers in the construction industry account for 51% of workers with 85% of jobs offered full-time.

In a range of settings you will learn to use practical painting and decorating tools, equipment and materials, and cover topics including surface preparation, decorative finishes, industrial protective coatings, and more. You will also learn about occupational health and safety, have the option to gain a White Card, and develop an understanding of the industrial structure, work organisation and possible career pathways. This intensive two week course provides hands-on training delivered by industry-experienced teachers and on-site industry work experience.

Upon successful complete of this short course you will be well placed to seek an apprenticeship in the painting and decorating industry. To further your employability opportunities, it is also strongly suggested that you enrol into the Construction Industry White Card Skill Set for an additional fee.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

While there are no formal entry requirements for this course, TAFE Queensland will require you to have:

  • a sound achievement in Year 10 English and maths or equivalent is recommended; and
  • a car and licence - required to get to and from construction sites (usually for a 6.30 - 7.00 am start).

Placement

You will be required to undertake one week (5 days) of work experience.

TAFE Queensland will be able to assist in finding work experience placements, our teachers are well connected with their industries.

Resources required

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements:

You will be required to wear the following PPE to attend:

  • Protective footwear: steel capped safety boots (no Volleys).
  • Protective clothing: clean shorts or long cotton pants (no track suit pants) and clean t-shirt or short sleeved shirt (no singlets).

This course is not intended for the hobbyist, it is to assist you in determining your suitability for an apprenticeship.

The Construction Industry White Card Skill Set can be completed (for an additional fee) during the first week of your training.

Assessment Methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
