Course overview

This course will prepare you to gain a qualification in a chosen welding process to ISO9606 Certification of Welders for Fusion Welding of Steels standards.

One of the following welding processes may be chosen:

  • Gas metal arc welding
  • Flux core arc welding
  • Manual metal arc welding
  • Gas tungsten arc welding

You will undertake an exam on the fourth day and you will then be able to apply for certification within the Australian Welder Certification Register (AWCR).

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

You will require a minimum of 2 years trade welding experience in your chosen process.

Resources required

Workwear and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

  • Protective clothing - long cotton drill trousers, and long-sleeved cotton drill shirt
  • Eye protection - must comply with AS1338
  • Hearing protection - must comply with AS1270 (is supplied)
  • Protective footwear - safety toe, leather upper, non-slip – must comply with AS2210
  • Hair protection - peak cap with a snood capable of fully containing hair
  • Welding helmets - it is preferred that you provide your own for hygiene reasons and it must comply with AS1338-1

Students who do not meet these minimum standards of work wear and PPE will not be permitted entry into workshops.

Need to know

You will ned to have welding theory knowledge and practical welding skills to meet qualification requirements.

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
