About the awards

In its fifth year The TAFE Queensland - SkillsTech Apprentice Awards are back.

The highly anticipated end-of-year event marks a celebration of TAFE Queensland - SkillsTech's most deserving apprentice trades men and women across 15 award categories. 

An inaugural addition in 2022 is the Employer of the Year Award celebrating TAFE Queensland's Small and Large Employer of the Year.

 

Entering the awards

Key dates

Employers, high schools, staff and teachers from TAFE Queensland - SkillsTech are invited to nominate in the 2022 TAFE Queensland - SkillsTech Apprentice Awards. 

Submissions will be accepted by video or written application up until midnight Sunday 17 July 2022. 

Eligibility

Apprentice nominations

Nominations are open to apprentices/trainees who:

  • Have been active in their apprenticeship between 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022; 
  • at any stage of their apprenticeship; 
  • respond to the selection critiera 
  • meet the conditions of entry.

Employer nominations

Small Employer of the Year

To nominate for small employer of the year, the business must:

  • Employ 9 or fewer apprentices (either employed directly with the business and/or as a host employer that partners with a Group Training Organisation). 
  • Meet the conditions of entry.


Large Employer of the Year

To nominate for large employer of the year, the business must:

  • Employ 10 or more apprentices (either employed directly with the business or Group Training Organisation and/or as a host employer that partners with a Group Training Organisation). 
  • respond to the selection critiera 
  • Meet the conditions of entry.  

Awards structure

You can submit a video or written application up until midnight Sunday 17 July 2022. 

A judging panel will shortlist nominees in each individual award category based on the submitted nominations. 

Shortlisted nominees will then be invited to participate in a phone or online interview in September, before three award finalists are selected in each award category. 

Award finalists, employers, sponsors and key industry guests will be exclusively invited to the Apprentice Awards and Celebration Evening on Thursday 10 November 2022 when the winners of each award category will be announced.

 

Carpentry Apprentice of the Year

This award covers carpentry, joinery, timber and composites, shop fitting, cabinetmaking, glass and glazing, furniture finishing, upholstery and flooring technology.

Furnishing  Trades Apprentice of the Year

This award covers cabinetmaking, furnishing, joinery, shop fitting, timber and composites machining. 

Construction - Wet Trades Apprentice of the Year

This award includes concreting, construction waterproofing, flooring technology, solid plastering, stonemasonry, surface finishing, wall & floor tiling, wall and ceiling lining and upholstery.  

Painting and Decorating Apprentice of the Year

Bricklaying Apprentice of the Year

Plumbing and Gas Fitting Apprentice of the Year

This award covers plumbing, gas fitting and roof plumbing.

Electrical Apprentice of Year

This award covers electrotechnology, electronics, data and voice communications, and electrical fitting.

Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Apprentice of the Year

This award covers refrigeration, air-conditioning and appliance servicing.

Light Automotive 

This award covers light vehicles, automotive electrical, cylinder head reconditioning, engine reconditioning, bicycle mechanics, marine mechanics and outdoor power and equipment. 

Heavy Commercial Industries Apprentice of the Year

This award includes heavy commercial vehicle technology, mobile plant technology, diesel fitting, diesel engine, diesel fuel technology specialist and drivetrain technology specialist. 

Engineering and Manufacturing Apprentice of the Year

This award covers engineering, manufacturing, metal fabrication, sheetmetal, locksmithing, bus truck and trailer and recreational vehicles. 

Recreational Vehicle Apprentice of the Year 

This award covers recreational vehicles training.

Instrumentation Apprentice of the Year

This award covers instrumentation and control.

School-based Apprentice of the Year

This award covers school-based apprentices and trainees.

General Managers Apprentice of the Year

This award is dedicated to apprentices who in the face of adversity have demonstrated resilience and exceptional achievement.

Outstanding Apprentice of the Year

Award winners are automatically selected as nominees in this category. This award is presented to a 3rd or 4th year individual trade award winner who demonstrates high level workmanship, training progression and achievement.

Employer of the Year

This award recognises organisations that develops leading workplaces that maximise the potential of their workforce and will be split into 2 awards; Small Employer of the Year and Large Employer of the Year.
