Gallery Y, an exciting new exhibition space, is opening to the public at the TAFE Queensland Cairns campus on Friday, 14 September between 6:00pm - 9:00pm.
TAFE Queensland Acting Director of Education and Training, Phil Williams said the launch is the final step in the organisation’s initiative to breathe new life into its on-campus arts scene.
“Along with the gallery, the Y Block Arts Hub also features a Makerspace, project area and long-term studio spaces which were offered to 6 local emerging and established artists earlier this year as part of our Y Block Studio Residency program,” Mr Williams said.
“TAFE Queensland is incredibly proud to be able to give these creative individuals a special place on our campus to sustain and develop their practice.
“The Gallery Y launch will feature pieces by our Studio Residents and art teachers and the exhibition has been entitled the Gatton Street Collection,” he said.
Y Block Studio Resident and well-known Cairns-based artist, Rick Beresford said the on-campus arts movement is a win.
“The general feel in Cairns is that there are not a lot of opportunities for artists to show their work, so it’s a huge bonus to have an extra space open up,” Mr Beresford said.
“Gallery Y has excellent lighting and an open plan, it’s a great purpose-built gallery space and more exhibitions are planned in the coming months,” he said.
Mr Williams said he hopes the launch will inspire more people to create and network.
“The Cairns campus is already home to the respected Banggu Minjaany Art Gallery and we feel the Y Block Arts Hub and Gallery Y will cement our credibility as North Queensland’s premium arts VET provider,” Mr Williams said.
“TAFE Queensland art teachers will be at the launch to discuss upcoming courses with interested potential students,” he said.
