For most of our doers, creators, innovators, helpers and interactors, organisation may not be something that comes naturally and you also have probably accumulated a lot of clutter over the years. If you need to change things up, decluttering and reorganising your work space or desk will help de-stress and inspire you. We promise that by decluttering your desk, you'll feel more productive when studying - but the same applies for the rest of your place too.
- Clutter can stress you out (don't believe us? UCLA has done a study that links high levels of stress hormones with people who own homes with a "high density of household objects" aka clutter)
- Stress can make you over eat and gain weight - why let clutter contribute to that?
- Having a messy or cluttered home can make you tired and affect your sleep, in addition to affecting your ability to focus, process information and make decisions (the Princeton University Neuroscience Institute will back us up)
- It could be costing you money (you might not be able to find that bill that's due - whoops)
- Clutter, especially dirty plates and dishes left out from study snacks, basically equals a welcome mat to all sorts of germs and pests (eww cockroaches)
- Clutter can also be physically dangerous - how many times have you tripped over something you left on the floor?
- If you're always late, decluttering will help because you won't have that inevitable hunt for a missing key or sock
Need some tips to get started? We've got you covered.
- Start by getting rid of the things that don't work any more. That means the broken stuff, the stained stuff, the outdated stuff. Has your stapler been jammed for the last 1057387491 years? Bin it.
- Follow this up by getting rid of the things that don't have mates anymore. That means things like odd socks or plastic containers without their lids. Got open glue sticks with no lids? Bin them.
- Next, get rid of the things you don't like any more or the things you regret buying. These things don't necessarily have to be binned, you can donate them if they're still in good condition. Does your study lamp annoy you now? Get rid of it and replace it.
- Finally, and this is often the hardest step, get rid of the things you don't use any more. Try using a 6 or 12 month rule, if you haven't used it in that amount of time, bin or donate it.
