To kick start his career he chose a pre-apprenticeship course through the TAFE at School program, the Certificate II in Salon Assistant, at Nurunderi to give himself an edge.
"I choose to do a pre-apprenticeship course because I knew that in the fast-paced and constantly changing hairdressing industry it would help to have a bit of experience under my belt to lock down an apprenticeship," said Travis.
Learning the basics like how to greet and prepare clients, communicate as part of a salon team, and perform salon duties through his TAFE at School course, gave him a great foundation for the future.
“The most enjoyable aspects of my course were getting to work with heaps of new people with the same career focus, and that this course was very practical with hands-on experience,” said Travis.
However, without the exceptional help, support and industry knowledge from his teachers, Travis would never have fallen in love with hairdressing and achieve his goal.
“My teacher Candy was amazing, with so many years of experience in hairdressing."
"The passion the teachers have for the industry is great, they really want you to achieve the best possible result.”
The job outlook for hairdressers in Australia is very positive. The industry is experiencing a skills shortage across Australia with employers looking for qualified workers with good customer service and teamwork skills.
"I'm very excited about my apprenticeship in Brisbane, and can't wait to see where the future takes me."
