Sunshine Coast mother-of-two Andrea Warren is furthering her studies and strengthening her budding photography business after receiving a TAFE Queensland scholarship.

Inspired by her mother, Andrea Warren had a passion for photography from a young age — but she wasn’t in the position to pursue it as a career. Years later, after watching her two teenage daughters follow their dreams, Andrea decided it was time to follow hers.

In 2018 Andrea enrolled in a Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging/Advanced Diploma of Visual Arts (CUA50915/CUA60715) at the TAFE Queensland Nambour campus.

“I've loved photography ever since I was a child. I can remember my mum handing me a camera when I was 10 and from that point on, I always had one in my hand,” Andrea said.

“I began my studies at TAFE Queensland believing I had a good understanding of photography and what it would take to run a successful business. What I’ve discovered is that I still had so much to learn,” she said.

“I never thought I would get the opportunity to study or create something for myself, and now I’m taking giant steps towards establishing a business that I can make a comfortable living from.”

During her studies, Andrea started her own business On Point Photographic Services. She soon realised that in order to stand out in a highly competitive industry on the Sunshine Coast, she’d need to diversify her skills. With this in mind, Andrea decided to expand her skill set and enrol in the Diploma of Graphic Design/Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design (CUA50715/CUA60315).

“I need to make my photography business stand out and being able to offer graphic design services in addition to photography is a great way to do that,” Andrea said.

While researching her study options, Andrea came across an ad for the TAFE Queensland Scholarship Program. She decided to submit an application and was lucky enough to be one of the deserving scholarship recipients.

“I was so excited when I was told I’d been selected. It meant I could make the next step of my dream a reality, by furthering my education to ensure my business is in the best place it can be,” she said.

“I'm so grateful to TAFE Queensland for the opportunities that have been afforded to me as a result of this scholarship.

“I’ve worked so hard, spending countless hours at the computer improving my editing skills and spending every spare cent I have on improving my photographic equipment and resources, so it was great to be recognised for that.”

The TAFE Queensland Scholarship Program first launched in 2015 and has since awarded over $1 million in scholarships and helped more than 250 Queenslanders pursue their career goals.

Two types of scholarships are available. The first are merit scholarships aimed at supporting people who have demonstrated strong levels of achievement to advance their careers. The second are access and equity scholarships designed to help students who are battling social or financial hardship.

Scholarship recipients can choose to study a TAFE Queensland qualification from a certificate III through to advanced diploma level across various industries such as business, creative, health, hospitality, information technology, trades and many more.

Applications for a TAFE Queensland scholarship to commence study in Semester 1 of 2020 will close on 29 August 2019.
