We paint and contour our faces with makeup brushes on a daily basis, but how and how often you clean them can make a huge difference.

Whether you're just doing your makeup at home or your makeup brushes are your tools of the trade, it's important to clean them properly and regularly. Cleaning brushes not only aids in the application of your makeup, but also keeps them hygenic so you minimise your risk of any nasty infections.

Here are seven easy steps to help you clean and maintain your makeup brushes:

  1. Use lukewarm water to wet the bristles
  2. Using makeup brush cleanser or soap, place a drop into the palm of your hand or on a makeup brush cleaning pad
  3. In your palm, gently massage the tips of the bristles
  4. Rinse the bristles
  5. Using a clean towel, squeeze out the excess moisture
  6. Reshape the brush head
  7. Place the brush with its bristles hanging off the edge of a counter, allowing it to dry in the correct shape

Bonus tips and tricks

  • Never let your brushes dry on a towel as the bristles can become mouldy and ruin your makeup brushes
  • If you don’t have makeup brush shampoo you can use baby shampoo or dish washing liquid
  • Makeup brush shampoo is gentle and best for longer lasting brushes
  • Reshape your brushes when wet so they dry like new again, you can also place makeup brush guards over them to help reshape brushes
  • Clean your brushes weekly
