Wakka Wakka and Ngemba woman Margaret Cobbo quite literally takes to the driver’s seat to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students achieve their training goals.

Indigenous Student Support Officer Margaret is so determined to see Nurunderi (Cherbourg) campus students succeed that she offers to drive them to and from class to ensure they don’t miss a second of learning.

"In 2003 I decided to take up a job at TAFE Queensland as I wanted to do more for Indigenous people in the training sector," said Margaret.

For more than 15 years Margaret has been working tirelessly to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to succeed.

"I make sure students get to classes by offering transport to and from the campus," Margaret said.

"I do this to ensure the students can achieve their goals to complete their qualification, I know that by doing this it helps them to a brighter future.”

Margaret said driving students is a small act that has big personal benefits.

“It's also rewarding for me when I see my students achieve a qualification they thought they couldn't and gain the confidence to do anything they set their minds to," Margaret said.

"It was particularly rewarding to watch one student complete a Certificate III in Individual Support, as well as a Certificate IV in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care and then a nursing diploma and now she's working for Queensland Health."

At TAFE Queensland, Indigenous Student Support Officers are available to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to reach their educational goals by providing support in a culturally sensitive manner.

The Nurunderi (Cherbourg) campus is the only TAFE Queensland location to be built on designated Aboriginal land, and the campus has strong cultural connections with 'Nurunderi' meaning 'taught by great spirit'.

TAFE Queensland offers a range of courses and support services specifically designed to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
