Enjoying the early days of their Certificate II in Kitchen Operations (SIT20416), students Catherine Laun and Leo Bai have already worked on a graduation event and gotten a taste of what real life hospitality is all about.

Both Catherine Laun and Leo Bai have dreams of a career in hospitality. One plans to study full time and the other is looking for an apprenticeship. Despite their different pathway choices they are both excited to see what the future cooks up.

Looking for a career in the hospitality industry both decided to enrol in a Certificate II in Kitchen Operations (SIT20416), an ideal taster experience.

Just six weeks into their course they were already getting real life, practical experience by working on a high profile event, the TAFE Queensland Ipswich Graduation.

"Graduation has been fun and a new experience prepping for this night," said Leo.

"I have never done anything like this before. It's new, fascinating and really enjoyable."

Learning the basics in food preparation and equipment, developing cookery skills and procedures in keeping a safe hygienic work place, are just some of the essential skills Catherine and Leo have already developed to prepare them for the future.

"I have learnt so much in the short time that I have been doing my course with Fenton and Sarah [my teachers]. It's amazing that we had the graduation so early on which I helped prepare for," said Catherine.

"I have developed so many skills already and look forward to learning lots more. I am planning to continue with a commercial cookery certificate," she continued.

"I'm really looking forward to heading out into the workforce and doing an apprenticeship," added Leo.

For Catherine and Leo they started with the basics, which has given them direction for their next steps in a diverse and growing industry.
