TAFE Queensland beauty, hairdressing and events management students had the chance to put their skills into practice at the 2019 Gold Coast Music Awards.

Beauty therapy and hairdressing students ran a glam station where they added extra glitz and glamour to artists before they made their way down the red carpet in front of media and fans.

Ashley Woolsey who's just four months into her Diploma of Beauty Therapy (SHB50115) said there was a real buzz on the red carpet as the artists arrived to get touched up before they made their grand entrance.

“It was such a unique experience to be among the energetic atmosphere of the event and also to be able to put my training into practice in a lively environment was such an amazing opportunity,” Ashley said.

“It's opportunities like this that will help set me up for my future as I can add these industry experiences to my resume to compliment the education and training I receive at TAFE Queensland.”

Event management students also gained work experience at the event by working alongside professionals assisting with various tasks on the night such as taking tickets on the door, putting wrist bands on guests, ushering artists from the stage, and handing out programs.

Diploma of Event Management (SIT50316) student Olivia Fishburn said she was motivated by the experience to get straight into the industry when she completes her studies.

“I had a lot of fun at the Gold Coast Music Awards, while also learning so much from the professionals about what it takes to pull off such a fantastic event of that calibre,” Olivia said.

“It has inspired me to soak up as much experience as I can and take up all these opportunities that TAFE Queensland continually provide us while we're studying.”

The GCMA team met regularly with the event students over the weeks leading up to the event to brief them and talk through run sheets, guest lists and logistics.

Director of the Gold Coast Music Awards Samantha Morris said the students played a massive part in making the night such a success.

“The students from TAFE Queensland were a huge support for my team as each and every one of them delivered exceptional service to our guests,” Samantha said.

“They all demonstrated the skills and talents it takes to produce an event like the Gold Coast Music Awards and required little support to prepare for their roles which demonstrates the quality of education and training that TAFE Queensland provide.”

TAFE Queensland General Manager on the Gold Coast, Karen Dickinson said it was an excellent project for the students to obtain a first-hand understanding of their industries.

“We're thrilled to work with the Gold Coast Music Awards to provide students with experience working in a live, fast-paced environment,” said Ms Dickinson.

“TAFE Queensland takes pride in providing real world experience to all of our students and has invested into the training delivery of our programs to include greater involvement with local industry.

“This ensures students get a well-rounded education so that they are well equipped with industry skills and knowledge upon graduation.”
