Bakers Delight Queensland have teamed up with TAFE Queensland, using their kitchens to bake over 1,000 bread loaves and rolls to give to hospital staff during the pandemic crisis.

Bakers Delight State Manager, Martyn Mason, who studied his Certificate III in Bread Baking (FBP30417) at TAFE Queensland, contacted his old tutors and asked to use the campuses state-of-the-art kitchens, as every Bakers Delight in the state was at capacity.

“Bakeries around Queensland are really busy, and we’re only going to get busier as people buy up before Easter,” said Martyn.

“Our hospital, retirement home and medical clinic staff are working really hard right now, but when they go to the supermarket they’re often finding empty shelves," he continued.

“So, I asked my old faculty if we could use their kitchens to bake the bread for the hard-working medical staff - and they were more than happy to help.”

Martyn and his team brought in 600kgs of flour and yeast to bake high fibre/low GI loaves and rolls to personally deliver to hospitals, retirement homes and medical clinics.

“The type of bread we’re giving away will keep busy medical professionals fuller for longer and give them energy to help them get through their long shifts,” continued Martyn.

Bakers Delight is a valued industry partner of TAFE Queensland, offering students baking masterclasses presented by their industry-renowned bakers each year.

However, the pandemic crisis has seen this important partnership extend beyond student guidance and into supporting our community during these unprecedented times.

“Having graduated from TAFE Queensland, I knew the kitchens were fully equipped with industry-standard cookware with the capacity to handle the volume we need to produce,” said Martyn.

Michael Wheeler, Team Manager for Bakery, Patisserie and Butchery at TAFE Queensland in Brisbane said his team was more than happy to help out.

“Supporting Bakers Delight during this time was an easy decision to make, and one we’re proud of,” said Michael.

“It’s great that we can work with our industry partners and support the important members of the community during these uncertain times.

“The kitchens at TAFE Queensland have the equipment and capacity to produce more than enough bread for our doctors and nurses, and we’re all proud to be a part of this initiative,” concludes Michael.
