Eddie Fowler came to Australia from the United Kingdom with the hopes and dreams of being able to live, study and one day permanently work in this beautiful country.

That was 10 years ago. Today, the 33-year-old operates a successful business on the Gold Coast, Eddie's Auto-Marine Electrical thanks to TAFE Queensland’s international student program.

“When I arrived in Australia my first job was a sales role in the automotive industry and that’s when I knew I wanted to move into a more practical role as a tradesperson working on engines,” said Eddie.

“However being a foreigner I didn’t really know what options were available to me in regards to studying a trade, but then I discovered TAFE Queensland’s international student program and jumped at the first chance to enrol.”

Within just four years Eddie had completed a Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology (AUR30316) as well as a Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology (AUR30616 | 095172E) both at TAFE Queensland’s Ashmore campus on the Gold Coast.

As part of these international programs, students are required to participate in vocational placement to provide them with the opportunity to apply the skills they learn on campus in a supervised, workplace environment.

Eddie said his first vocational placement was with a local employer and he was absolutely thrilled to be given the chance to prove his skills out in industry.

“I remember thinking how grateful I was to be given the opportunity to work and study in this beautiful part of the world doing exactly what I love,” he said.

This led to full-time employment as Eddie was hired by his vocational employer. He worked there for a few years before starting his own business, exclusively employing international students.

“Now as an employer I'm only taking on international students to give them that same opportunity that I was once given,” he said.

“Employing international students from TAFE Queensland is extremely rewarding and allows me to give back to the system that gave me a chance to follow my dreams.”

Eddie said without TAFE Queensland he wouldn’t be where he is today, living in paradise and fulfilling his career dreams as a business owner.

“TAFE gave me an opportunity and with the guidance of my teachers and enthusiasm in their direction I felt confident to start my own business taking on other international students.”

“From my firsthand experience, TAFE Queensland on the Gold Coast provides the best and most real-world training available which allows students to easily transition straight into industry and into a job.”
