I'm Trudy Bellamy, a 45-year-old mother of six. After overcoming an illness I chose a whole new career path and TAFE Queensland have supported me the whole way.

A long health battle that left me bedridden gave me plenty of time to think about a new future - I've gone from a career as a personal assistant in family law to learning beauty therapy and I have never been happier.

I chose to study a Certificate III in Beauty Services (SHB30115) because I like making people feel great. I enjoyed mucking around with my girls, and I thought if I can make them feel special then I'd love to make others feel that way too. I know what it's like to feel hopeless, horrible and not be able to do a lot for yourself, so if someone can make others feel alive and better about themselves, I wanted that someone to be me.

I chose TAFE Queensland because the offer was there, it was easy for me, it was available and the course had what I was searching for.

Being the oldest in the class, I have had to learn how to blend with the younger crowd but I found it quite easy though. I think if you're young at heart you can do that. I enjoy working with other people and having different interests yet such a common goal made my experience fun and exciting.

The teachers are awesome always helpful, supportive and encouraging. We faced some really troubled times with COVID-19. We had seven weeks where we weren't able to practice anything. They were on board with Zoom.  The teachers went above and beyond to find how to record and send the sessions via emails. They were helpful in a time of such horrible circumstances.

If someone asked me if they should study at TAFE Queensland, I would say "What do you have to lose? You never know - you could end up enjoying what you're learning and want to do that forever". For people who think they aren't capable of things or "oh I couldn't do that" - I was one of you -  and my words to you are "you don't know until you try! Give it a go!"

I have started my own home salon called Flutter into Beauty. I created a business name inspired by my Aboriginal heritage. I am a Tweed Heads girl, Bundjalung, I was given a totem of a butterfly from an Elder. I have incorporated this into the name of my business in the word “Flutter” and in the symbol of a butterfly on my logo. I have registered my business name and also have an ABN. I have started an Instagram and Facebook page. While I have been studying I have been practicing waxing, tinting and eyelash extensions on family and friends - you either love eyelash extensions or you don't! I am one of those crazy people who really enjoy applying eyelash extensions.

I love being able to transform somebody. It is amazing to have the positive end result when you and the client look at each other and think "wow, that's really nice". I thank TAFE Queensland for guiding me and helping me learn these skills.

I am proud of my journey and am excited by the future.
